Bangladesh has long been in my heart as it connects to what once was that greater land mass called India and now partitioned into three countries. It also has close connections to Calcutta in West Bengal and for me one of the world’s greatest cities. But in almost every way India, despite its charm, pales next to Bangladesh: there are people every where, Dhaka out does everything any Indian city has to offer be it rich and poor, decay and splendour, noise, dust, dirt and excitement. Out of the city the land is a mass of rivers, lakes and radiant green fields all linked by bridges, poor roads and towns and villages that seem to merge into one an other. I spent some time travelling between these in 2015. Meeting the wonderful people that make this country so welcoming is worth the extra effort it takes to be and survive here. Here is but a small piece of it.
